Henley Sixes

In The beautiful game on August 26, 2009 at 8:22 am

No I’ve not taken up rowing, I’m far too unfit for that… but I have been stepping up my wii fit workouts and trying to do at least 30 minutes a day – the hardest part having to get up early so my wife can jump on after me in between looking after the baby in the morning. My wii fit age is coming down along with a bit of weight, so all good.

Last week my newish football team ‘Boca Seniors’ have started playing 6-a-side in Henley – a six a side tag now as well? – The facilities are really good on a large astroturf pitch next to the rugby club. We all agreed it was much more like real football than the pinball of Prospect Park. Maybe it’s because we weren’t doing so well there in terms of results? Even though we had a baptism of fire in our first game against the league leaders and we got beat *!@& – 0, it was a good game and I got to do some kicking and am generally more involved in the game, so much so I picked up a black eye from somewhere!

More updates on league positions etc. to come…

Camden Tuesday Premiership Spring 2009 – Season Review

In The beautiful game on August 13, 2009 at 8:38 am

Even though we moved up to the Premiership as Champions from the season before, we had lost a few players to injury and the squad didn’t seem as strong. But opening day was quite positive as we scored 3 goals against one of the contenders for the league. Although we lost 5-3 we were confident we we could get enough points to stay in the league. But despite a 5-0 drubbing of what would turn out to be the bottom team, we lost 6 of the first seven games and were deep in the relegation zone.

But then came a rally of 7 points from the next three games, which as it turned out would be enough to secure our safety. Although we lost our last two, we had achieved our objective of avoiding relegation by just one point. A dramatic draw against old adversaries Rage Against Retirement, would be our saviour.

On the whole a good season, with all players chipping in goals in the absence of our regular strikers. Even Rich P was in contention at one point for top scorer! Plus he missed a penalty…

On a personal level, I got 2 MOM awards and feel like I’m in pretty good form at the moment. No thoughts of retirement just yet…

Relegation avoided

In The beautiful game on July 29, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Despite a 5-1 defeat to title chasing DLA, Torpedo avoided relegation after our nearest rival lost to the league leaders. Once again, we let things slip in the second half after being only 1-0 down at half time. Although there was too much activity around our goal with quite a bit of work to do for me! Second half saw even more shots and saves and I got the MOM for probably being the busiest player on the field. That’s two for the season now. We did score a nicely worked goal finished of by Tom – who now has 6 goals in 3 games since his comeback – so even against good teams we can still produce.

So with still one game to play, next week should be a relaxed and celebratory affair. Ironically we are playing the team we were battling against for the drop, so they will no doubt want to put one over on us.

Either way, I’m looking forward to that end-of-season beer.

On theme changes…

In Uncategorized on July 25, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Thinking about changing my theme again. I’ve seen a few blogs using Cutline, but I also like Emigre , Grid Focus and Twenty-Eight Thirteen. I would try and use Sandbox as I’ve seen some cool sites using it, but I’m not sure where to start. Looks like more tutorials…

Any suggestions, or do you like the way it is?

A point to prove

In The beautiful game on July 22, 2009 at 9:00 pm

It was my wedding anniversary this week, so no football…

In my absence the guys did good by getting a 4-4 draw. Haven’t heard the match report yet, but I bet it was a cracker! WE ARE STAYING UP, SAY WE ARE STAYING UP!

Moving on up

In The beautiful game on July 15, 2009 at 10:52 pm

Back-to-back wins for the first time this season have moved Torpedo out of the bottom two. Welcoming back our top scorer Tom, he wasted no time adding to his tally with two goals in the first half. A sweet left foot finish from Lloyd early in the second and it should have been game over, but we once again got the jitters and conceded two goals to make for a nervous finish, but we held on.

Other results mean that we probably can’t finish any higher, but with a return game against the team below us, it should be in our hands to stay up.

The late, late, late show

In The beautiful game on July 8, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Downpours late in the afternoon sent the traffic into chaos, and I was looking at another late showing to a 7 o’clock kick off. Luckily, the congestion eased and I made it to the game just before half-time.

Playing the bottom side in the league, a win was vital to start our push to avoid relegation. We were 2-1 up when I arrived, so that all important first goal after the break was going to be even more so. And it came and what should have been a coast to the finish again became a panic. Two quick goals and we were back in a fight, only to be saved by Donny who skipped through and rounded the keeper just before the final whistle.

In the post match analysis, it turned out that we started the game with four men! So our 4-3 win was well deserved. Four games to go and it looks like a straight fight between us and the team above to avoid the bottom two.
