One Minute Portrait #7

In Art for art's sake on February 26, 2010 at 5:40 pm

Been away from blogging for a while, not really sure why just been busy since the back-end of last year.

Just to catch up, Isabel, my daughter (in the portrait) will be 1 year old soon. I’m still playing football for both Boca Seniors in Henley and less frequently Torpedo TF in London. I’m due to play for TF next week in their last game of the current season and another relegation nail biter.

Promise I’ll try and be more regular with the postings from now on…

Camden Tuesday Premiership Spring 2009 – Season Review

In The beautiful game on August 13, 2009 at 8:38 am

Even though we moved up to the Premiership as Champions from the season before, we had lost a few players to injury and the squad didn’t seem as strong. But opening day was quite positive as we scored 3 goals against one of the contenders for the league. Although we lost 5-3 we were confident we we could get enough points to stay in the league. But despite a 5-0 drubbing of what would turn out to be the bottom team, we lost 6 of the first seven games and were deep in the relegation zone.

But then came a rally of 7 points from the next three games, which as it turned out would be enough to secure our safety. Although we lost our last two, we had achieved our objective of avoiding relegation by just one point. A dramatic draw against old adversaries Rage Against Retirement, would be our saviour.

On the whole a good season, with all players chipping in goals in the absence of our regular strikers. Even Rich P was in contention at one point for top scorer! Plus he missed a penalty…

On a personal level, I got 2 MOM awards and feel like I’m in pretty good form at the moment. No thoughts of retirement just yet…

Relegation avoided

Despite a 5-1 defeat to title chasing DLA, Torpedo avoided relegation after our nearest rival lost to the league leaders. Once again, we let things slip in the second half after being only 1-0 down at half time. Although there was too much activity around our goal with quite a bit of work to do for me! Second half saw even more shots and saves and I got the MOM for probably being the busiest player on the field. That’s two for the season now. We did score a nicely worked goal finished of by Tom – who now has 6 goals in 3 games since his comeback – so even against good teams we can still produce.

So with still one game to play, next week should be a relaxed and celebratory affair. Ironically we are playing the team we were battling against for the drop, so they will no doubt want to put one over on us.

Either way, I’m looking forward to that end-of-season beer.

A point to prove

It was my wedding anniversary this week, so no football…

In my absence the guys did good by getting a 4-4 draw. Haven’t heard the match report yet, but I bet it was a cracker! WE ARE STAYING UP, SAY WE ARE STAYING UP!

Moonlight shootout

In The beautiful game on July 2, 2009 at 10:31 pm

I’ve been moonlighting in goal for my brother-in-law’s team for the past few weeks and Torpedo didn’t have a game this week. Unfortunately after a friendly last week I caught a ball awkwardly and damaged my wrist. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem too bad, but was still a bit sore for this weeks game.

I’d been a bit of a bad omen for the ‘Boca Seniors’ and we hadn’t won any of the games I’d played for them so far. So 3-1 down at half time was looking a familiar story. But the lads dug in and managed to draw level. The game ended at 3-3 but it was a cup tie, so went straight to penalties. We scored our first two and our opponents had missed one, but we missed our last so it was down to the last pen. As on the other two, I guessed the right way but the ball was off target anyway and I had my first victory with the team.

The heat of summer continues, and back to the Camden League next week.
